And then Parashkevia was swallowed up by oblivion again...
Parashchevi Simaku

After months of oblivion, Parashqevi Simaku reappeared last week in the media and on social networks. The reason was an interview with Fevziu, taken in New York.

One of the goals seemed to be to raise awareness about the singer's future. She currently lives on money given to her by an Albanian-American businessman, but time is running out and the risk that the singer will be left without a livelihood and return to the life of a vagrant on a rock in Times Square is becoming more and more present every day.

The call, even indirectly, for charity or for help from the state is completely justified in such cases. Affirming this and wishing the singer the best possible solution, we cannot forget some problems that, although related to her case, are of general interest.

IT specialists say that if the extremely high interest that the news that the Albanian song icon was living a vagrant had been properly exploited, several hundred thousand euros could have been raised, enough for the singer to return to a normal, perhaps even productive, life. Thinking of such paths without leaving everything to the state and charity means living with the times, being modern in the best sense of the word.

Given the emotional turmoil that the bitter revelation of last December aroused, we forgot that such moments are very favorable for publicly discussing acute problems and especially for creating a healthy public opinion about them.

For example, copyright issues could have been discussed: if Parashqevi Simaku's songs were circulated in a regulated market and not pirated by anyone who could, the artist would have had enough financial means to cover her living expenses, treatment, etc. The violation of copyright, not only for heritage but also for current creativity, proves what place we have given to values at a time when we spend half the day listening to and talking about crimes and criminals of all kinds.

A series of problems related to charity could have been discussed, starting with the fact that it resembles a plant that does not grow in our neighborhood, continuing with charity in front of the camera, that is, charity where charity shouts 'look at what I'm doing'. And thus, by bringing itself to the forefront, it does not let us think about the unfortunate or the problems related to it that require attention and action.

Problems related to our immigrant communities could also be discussed. Why, even after so many decades, Albanian immigrant organizations are almost non-existent and formal, and the disaffected among them often find it easier to find help and support from Greek, Jewish, etc. organizations than to turn to their compatriots?

Mental health problems could be discussed, especially the tendency to hide them from the public, to turn them into either taboos or targets for stigmatization, contempt, and discrimination. Closely related to this, one could discuss the brutal media intrusions into the private lives of unfortunate people who become sensational after a domestic crime.

All of this, or some of it, could be discussed publicly and, taking advantage of the opportunity, since attention was at its peak, something could be done, at least to create a healthy opinion, at most to change something according to the motto 'one stone builds a wall'.

We didn't do it and now, when the iconic singer reappears in public life thanks to an interview, we see that the attention to her and her fate is no longer the same as last December. By letting such occasions slip away from us, by letting them be used only for sensations and emotions, for tears and tears, as the old man would say, we turn public discourse into a tribal sigh or a kind of fairy tale that, in this case, would bear the title: And then Parashqevë swallowed her again into oblivion….
