Thank you, for the special pleasure that this invitation gave me and the privilege of participating in this organization with honorable ladies and gentlemen, and surely concerned mothers and fathers, for the delicate topic that we have been invited to discuss.
Obesity is a concern that, although, if I am not mistaken, has been the focus of public and institutional attention for almost a quarter of a century, it continues to be a threat to life and health in our societies.
A few days ago, with my 9-year-old son, we went to the supermarket to shop. I realized in time that my son not only never refuses my invitation to the supermarket, but experiences it as joy, as he is exposed to everything tempting that I try to protect him from. And being with me in the face of attractive packaging with forbidden tastes, it can struggle to pull off the shelves products that I never have on the shopping list.
My position in this feverish war for dough and sugar, has been saved from defeat by a long-standing compromise, in which I hold myself very heroically. He can only choose one product at will, and as you can imagine, when faced with the non-negotiable rule, he never reaches beyond the calorie bombs. And I also buy it as an opportunity to peacefully continue my conversation on the harmful, until we get home.
"Is what you are looking to buy healthy?", I asked him this time. "No!", he told me. "You learn at school," I said, "how to eat healthy, together we talk about what is and what is not healthy for you... Can you tell me why you choose the wrong things again and again? "Very simple, mom," he answered, "because it's delicious and I can't resist it!" Even adults", he continued, "can't resist harmful things, because then cigarettes wouldn't be sold in the supermarket, right?!".
So even though we know more today than ever before in history about the sources of health damage, we continue to fall into the age-old trap of tasting unhealthy things. And the battle to prevent especially children from falling into this trap, to teach them to understand this trap, seems increasingly hopeless in the face of the consumerist deluge, which has already entered our lives through virtual windows as well as doors of supermarkets. Certainly their first window of example and their first door of knowledge is us, but we are smaller and smaller next to the countless windows and doors of this time of relentless shrinking of the world and shaping of the global village. Even the community, the state itself, look smaller and smaller in the face of the daily melting of ethical, moral, institutional and state boundaries.
Mankind has not invented the recipe for salvation from the trap of the taste of things that do harm, but we cannot let the new traps of modern times, so that in the absence of saving recipes, they will devour our children in the darkness of a hell where life turns into a challenge completely beyond the control of the individual, the family, the community, the state, all of humanity.
To be united to win the battle against childhood obesity is an invitation that contributes to every other battle against the traps of the modern times we live in. The Child Obesity Prevention Network that is being promoted today here in Zagreb conveys a clear message: Let's cross the borders to do modestly and decisively what a holy Albanian woman, Mother Teresa, advised: Instead of cursing the darkness, light a candle!
Thank you.
