The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has described the fires that caused major damage in several areas of the country this summer as a state crime.
According to Berisha, Albania suffered greater burns than many countries in the region, as the government reported through propaganda about thousands of troops on the ground.
"Today I am before the media to denounce as a true state crime the fires, flames and burning of over 54 thousand hectares of olive groves, gardens, orchards, and forests.
The burning of hundreds of homes in the villages of Gramsh, Delvina and a series of other areas.
The burning of hundreds and thousands of livestock, not to mention wild animals, and the flattening of all flora and fauna in these areas.
The burning of hundreds of thousands of beehives.
Albania has never known such devastating fires.
There were casualties, there were burns, there were injuries. Albanians felt more abandoned than ever.
On this occasion, I condemn with the greatest force all those individuals who committed the heinous crime of arson, and they deserve the greatest legal punishment.
I express my great solidarity with all the victims, the injured, and those hundreds and thousands of families of farmers and villagers who lost everything they had due to the fires.
But I condemn as a state crime the disgusting, deceptive propaganda of the narco-government, which spoke of tens of thousands of forces engaged, at a time when journalists from the battlefield reported that firefighters or other forces fighting fires could be counted on the fingers of one hand.
But today, I am here to clarify to Albanians why the devastation caused by the fires this year is a true state crime.
They are a state crime because irresponsibly, due to corruption, theft, indifference and ignorance, Albania was found completely disarmed of firefighting equipment.
Albania suffered fires and burns two to three times larger than all the countries in the region. And it's not that fires didn't break out all over the region, but every country was much, much better prepared than Albania in the battle against fires.
"In general, the old firefighting system, inherited from 15-20 years ago, handed over to socialist municipalities, proved to be rusty and dysfunctional ," said Berisha.
