Taulant Malaj sentenced to life in prison for killing 16-year-old girl and neighbor

Taulant Malaj, the Albanian citizen who shocked Italy with the double crime in May 2023, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Court of Foggia.

Malaj, 47, was found guilty of the intentional murder of his 16-year-old daughter, Jessica Malaj, and his Italian neighbor, Massimo De Santis, whom he suspected of having an affair with his ex-wife, Tefta Malaj.

The crime occurred in the family's apartment in Torremaggiore on May 7, 2023. Malaj stabbed his daughter to death as she tried to protect her mother from her father's attack.

The neighbor was also killed in the attack, while his wife was injured, in front of the couple's young son, only five years old at the time.

In addition to the life sentence, the court also imposed daytime isolation for one year and six months, as well as a three-year probationary security measure.

During the trial, Malaj's defense tried to argue that he had acted under the influence of a mental disorder caused by sleep problems.

But the psychiatric expertise conducted by forensic doctor Luigi Esposto ruled out this claim, emphasizing that Malaj had full cognitive and discerning capacity at the time of the crime.

Lawyer Roberto De Rossi, who assisted Tefta Malaj, the woman who has since changed her surname, has never considered " the thesis raised by the defense, of a mental defect of the defendant attributed to a sleep disorder, credible. The behaviors carried out immediately after the murder highlighted the presence of cognitive and discriminative abilities, supported during the trial by the testimony of the forensic psychiatrist, Luigi Esposto, who visited the defendant in prison, excluding the presence of psychiatric pathologies."

Tefta Malaj's lawyer stated that today's decision fully confirms the prosecution's version and rejects attempts to relativize the crime through an unfounded psychiatric defense.
