In Albania, the former Minister of Health, Ilir Beqaj , part of the government cabinet in the first term of Prime Minister Edi Rama , was arrested today under suspicion of involvement in a corruption scheme for benefits from the funds of the Agency for the Coordination of Foreign Aid and the programs of EU.
In addition to him, it is learned that the Special Prosecutor's Office against Organized Crime and Corruption has issued arrest warrants for four associates of Mr. Beqaj, two of whom are under arrest in prison and two others are under house arrest.
Mr. Beqaj was appointed head of the Agency in 2021, despite the suspicions that were raised against him about the concession processes in Health.
In November of last year, he resigned, after the security measure of "obligation to appear" and "ban on travel abroad" was imposed on him, as part of the investigation into the case of sterilization of surgical equipment.
During this investigation, the former Deputy Minister of Health Klodian Rrjepaj and entrepreneur Ilir Rrapaj, who was a partner with 40 percent of the shares of the company that had won the concession, were arrested earlier.
His partner was the Italian company Servizi Italia. In March of this year, Mr. Beqaj was charged with "abuse of duty".
Earlier, in December of last year, the authorities of Justice exercised control in the apartment of Mr. Beqaj, in the framework of the new investigation that was being carried out for the abuse of funds of the Eusair program ( European Union Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian region ), coordinator of who was a person closely related to Mr. Beqaj.
According to the investigations, in the name of this program, fictitious invoices of several thousand euros were requested and received, for incomplete services "by placing fictitious values in invoices for the purpose of material gain, as well as being involved in corrupt actions for the purpose of gain".
