Albania is facing a significant increase in cases of respiratory infections.
During the second week of August alone, 9,082 patients sought medical help due to respiratory problems.
According to official data from the Institute of Public Health (ISHP), the figures are close to the threshold of 10,000 cases per week, which is the alarm limit for the health system.
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections – such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and laryngitis – are trending upward, putting doctors on constant alert.
Why are cases increasing?
Air conditioning and sudden changes in temperature are among the most common causes.
"Citizens stay in the cold air environment for a long time and then go out into the scorching heat outside."
Another factor is the beach. Many vacationers, after getting out of the cold water, stay in the shade or in windy places for a long time, exposing their bodies to sudden cold.
Doctors warn that children and chronic patients are most at risk. For these categories, a mild viral infection can lead to serious complications.
Public health specialists provide some practical guidelines for protecting yourself from respiratory viruses during the summer.
– Do not use the air conditioner too much at low temperatures; the difference with the outside air should not exceed 7–8 degrees.
-Avoid standing in direct air from the air conditioner.
-After swimming in the sea, change wet clothes and avoid exposure to the wind.
– Take care of hydration and healthy nutrition, which helps to maintain immunity.
-Consult your doctor if you experience symptoms such as a strong cough, fever, chest pain or shortness of breath.
The IHP warns that if the trend increases by the end of August, hospitals and health centers will face a high influx of sick people, mainly vacationers in tourist areas.
This would burden hospital capacities, especially the emergency room of the Tirana University Hospital.
"We are on full alert. The epidemiological situation is not good, so more care is needed from everyone," emphasize the IHP specialists./gazetaSi
