Veliaj: 100 thousand people employed in the construction industry
Erion Veliaj

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, spoke in a television interview about the construction permits granted in recent years. Veliaj said that not every permit is a building, as it also includes permits for reconstructions, educational facilities, nurseries, etc.

"I'm taking a segment, from 2016-2021, for permits that are real construction permits. If you look, only 30% are buildings that are called high-rise buildings, not single-story houses. The rest are low complex buildings, like the ones you have here in Farka and on the outskirts of Tirana, in the area of Dajti, in the area of Mullet, in the area of Baldushuk, in the area of Vaqarri. The other 30% are reconstruction, roof, construction demolition, surrounding wall covering, additional volume, etc. It is about objects or permits that are either maintenance or repairs of existing ones. Not every permit is a palace and you should all be clear about that. This other part with green is industrial facilities. The square meters of the territory where the permit is valid are measured. We have an obligation to report all these permits", said Veliaj.

He underlined that the number of tall buildings in the capital is lower.

"For the center, out of all these 1000 permits, you have no more than 6 literal towers in Tirana. If we want Tirana as abroad, we will do it as abroad. If we want adobe, we had adobe and it's not that we didn't do much with the economy, tourism and business. It's not like it was the city of dreams. Here we are talking about only a few tall buildings in the center, like all of us who have also gone outside and seen the city centers. Any document from the municipality that gives you the opportunity to change a physical reality is called a permit and is registered in INSTAT," stated Veliaj.

According to Veliaj, if it wasn't for the construction industry, 100,000 people would have been out of work. He emphasized that they are also the biggest taxpayers.

"It doesn't seem to me that you see more people with matrapik on the streets. If we see the INSTAT pages we should see them all. Not only what is built and what permits are and the typology of the permit, that someone who lays bathroom tiles must get a permit or who changes the roof, but you should also look at what it brings to that other page of INSTAT, to employment. It turns out that 100,000 people work in construction", declared Veliaj.
