Inside Story has purchased several different types of cheese at random, samples of which will be sent for analysis.
The selection is made from the cheapest to the most expensive products, to see an important indicator such as the level of fat. Indicator, which leads to the discovery of whether we are dealing with animal fat or palm oil.
In order to carry out a precise and correct process, we have decided to store and transport the samples with a cooler.
After we bought all the samples for analysis, we went to a private laboratory in Tirana. The collection and delivery of samples was done according to all the criteria and rules defined at the beginning of the procedure. It takes a few days for the results to come out. This is the method to understand if the products we consume are natural or counterfeit.
However, not every citizen has this opportunity and no one can turn to laboratories every time they are supplied with milk. This procedure that we are following is normally a routine work of the National Food Authority. However, we will perform some fairly simple tests that anyone of us can perform at home.
In cheese, what is considered a massively encountered problem is bulking using starch. To understand this, we have taken some samples of cheese in one of the shops near the New Market in Tirana.
In total, we took 8 different randomly selected samples including goat, sheep and cow cheese. The products are produced by entities from different areas of the country that are named after the local units from which they come in the capital.
In fact, this is also the way they are marketed without having any label or information if they have additional industrial ingredients such as palm oil or flavoring.
The test we will do is with iodine, the same one that is used to treat various wounds that anyone can have at home.
We dripped a few drops onto each sample and waited for each to happen. Cheese that begins to darken and change color indicates that there is a percentage of starch in it.
From our test it turned out that Pérmeti cow cheese changed color and became blue as you can see. Mixed cheese produced by a dairy in Pogradec also changed color and became darker. The same result is obtained with the goat cheese produced in Erseke.
So, our random test revealed that at least 3 of the samples are counterfeit products. The use of starch is done by manufacturers to increase the mass at a lower cost. Here, we are facing a fraud against the consumer who is consuming starch!
Evidence that reveals the mass marketing of palm oil cheese
There is another method to find out if the dairy we consume has natural ingredients or is fake like the 3 samples we showed.
We put a part of the cheese we bought in a container with clean water.
We have left all containers with cheese soaked in water for two weeks in a cool environment as suggested by food safety experts.
This is a method to find out if the cheese contains starch or palm oil. If the water becomes yellow and sticky, it indicates that there is a quantity of palm oil.
If the product contains palm oil, the manufacturer must clearly demonstrate it on the label, which is not present in any of the products.
The test we conducted showed that the water in which the Gjirokastra sheep's cheese is placed has turned the color of whey. Gjirokastra goat's cheese is melted like yogurt. If the product returns to a liquid state like the original ingredient that is milk, it shows that it is of good quality.
Libohova goat's cheese has acquired the color of whey. Libohova's sheep's cheese is not made like whey, but has a white color. This leads to suspicions about other ingredients. One of them can be starch.
In the mixed cheese of Pogradec, the water has become sticky. According to experts, if the water becomes yellow and sticky, this indicates that palm oil has come out of the cheese. Përmet cow's cheese has remained strong.
This is also an abnormal indicator. We recall that this cheese was initially found to be starchy with the iodine test. We repeat the iodine test once again after leaving it in the water for 15 days. Again the cheese turns blue. So it has starch content.
Does the use of palm oil in dairy products cause cancer?
All over the world there are products made with palm oil. If this oil is used in small quantities, it is not dangerous to health.
The problem is that in our country not everyone declares the palm oil they use. The consumption of many products with palm oil can lead to an increase in cancerous diseases in the population.
If we do a quick survey in our markets regarding the labels that the producers themselves have put up, there is no mention of palm oil. It is referred to as vegetable fat in various products. However, we should know that many products sold in markets contain palm oil.
Here we can mention chips, sweets, cheese, butter, canned foods, etc.
In 2021, a study was published in Spain that talked about the impact that palm oil has on the chronically ill and not only.
According to the study, it is shown that palm oil affects the growth of cancer cells. But healthy citizens or even children who consume products containing or cooked with palm oil are also at risk.
