'Business' trips and criminal pacts: The boss of Cosa Nostra, Matteo
Matteo Messina Denaro

After the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro in Italy, prosecutors are investigating the movements that the super boss has made in the last 30 years on the run.

From Spain to Albania, the drug business would lead the 60-year-old to travel and do business himself.

According to the media, precisely in Albania, Messina Denaro had initially sent Luca Bellomo, the husband of his granddaughter Lorenza, as an "ambassador" for the establishment of these relations, and then went personally.

The illicit profits from these activities would have allowed him to maintain a very high standard of living.

In Campobello di Mazara, a town a few kilometers from his Castelvetrano, Matteo Messina Denaro (under the name of Andrea Bonafedes), stayed there for two years before being identified and arrested.

But in thirty years on the run, the mafia boss of "Cosa Nostra" has moved to different countries: Albania, Spain, Tunisia, Montenegro and, in Italy, Calabria.

According to the Italian investigators, the trips and long stays have had drugs in common.

A business which, like that of illegal betting, is able to bring large monetary values, i.e. an asset that served to maintain a fugitive with a very high standard of living (around 150 million euros per year).

If Spain is a country that the mafia boss knows since 1994, when he examined himself at the "Barraquer" ophthalmology center in Barcelona, the tracks that see him in Albania and Tunisia have recently been discovered.

In both cases, the drug and smuggling market seems to have attracted the boss (recent investigations have documented the transfer through the Sicilian smuggling channel of processed foreign tobacco hidden aboard fishing vessels).

In Albania, the Italian media reports , Messina Denaro has sent an "ambassador" of his, to go personally to contact and falsify - say the investigators - relations with representatives of institutions and business.

On his last trip, he played in a casino in Montenegro. His business journey has come to a halt after the diagnosis of cancer, which he learned while in Sicily.

Since then, the 60-year-old has settled in Campobello, in the Trapani area, where he could enjoy a secure network of supporters.

Moreover, Messina Denaro is said to have chosen to stay close to the family even in the worst case, just like his father, the former boss of "Cosa Nostra".

To enjoy life and every day as if it were his last, he has resumed dining with friends and taking trips.

It is possible that he lived in the belief that no one would suspect that the most wanted man in the world was located eight kilometers from his home.
