Vacation turns into tragedy: a young man from Nice, France, is killed in Albania. Having arrived in Nice at the age of 11, the young man was killed during a fight. His death in Ksamil (Albania) has particularly shocked the educators of La Semeuse, who had accompanied him for several years.
In La Semeuse, everyone knew him by his nickname: “Milton.” Luis Miguel Varela Mendes was 20 years old. Arriving in Nice at the age of 11, the young man from Cape Verde had attended Vernier high school before settling in the Gambetta neighborhood.
On Tuesday, August 18, the young man was stabbed to death in Ksamil, a coastal tourist area in southern Albania. According to Albanian police, a violent fight broke out at around 5:15 a.m. in a bar and then continued on a nearby beach.
The main suspect, 29 years old, was arrested a few hours later, hiding in the trunk of a car heading to Tirana.
In Nice, the news of “Milton’s” death caused great emotion, especially within La Semeuse. “I was informed about it quite quickly,” says Christophe Tassano, general director of the association.
The young man was followed and supported by the teams of the La Ruche social center, on Trachel Street, where he participated in activities intended for adolescents and young people.
"Young Milton was very loved, very appreciated in the neighborhood. He had a mediator role. He always tried to calm conflicts," says Christophe Tassano.
A trip that had to be made to Spain
Milton and his friends had another plan. They were supposed to leave for Spain on August 26, as part of the “Sac à dos” program, organized by the family assistance fund.
But, due to delays in organizing this trip, the group ultimately decided to leave for Albania with their own vehicles, without giving up the planned trip to Spain.
According to Christophe Tassano, the educators had tried to convince them not to go to Albania.
Since the tragedy, the latter have immediately mobilized around the family. The director of the La Semeuse social center is in the neighborhood to support people's emotions and pain.
The Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis has also been notified and has mobilized its mediators for public peace.
"We also guide people in need towards assistance and support structures for victims, set up in collaboration with the Metropol," explains Christophe Tassano.
It is about the Victims' Reception House.
“The specialist prevention team has strengthened its presence in the affected areas and maintains close contact with young people, including those who were with Milton in Albania.”
The family was already going through a particularly difficult period: their apartment had recently been destroyed by a fire and his parents were currently sheltering in a hotel in the Saint-Charles neighborhood.
Repatriation and lawyer's fees
In addition to the human consequences of the tragedy, the family must now face numerous and difficult procedures.
Relatives should especially organize the repatriation of Milton's body from Albania to Portugal.
They should also be able to be assisted by a lawyer in Albania, to follow the judicial procedure that has just begun.
A fundraising account has been opened, in collaboration with the family, to help them cover these expenses. By Friday, it had already raised more than 6,300 euros.
La Semeuse is not alone in supporting the family. The Dix Étoiles association, which is very active in the Cap Vert community in Nice, has also mobilized and, together with La Semeuse, is helping Milton's relatives with the many procedures that await them. (Nice Matin)
