The Supreme Court has upheld the decision to sentence Arbër Çekaj to 14 years in prison , who benefited from a 1/3 reduction in sentence due to the summary trial.

Arbër Çekaj has been found guilty of trafficking a quantity of 613 kg of cocaine that was seized in 2018 at the Port of Durrës.

The narcotics were found in a container of bananas that came from Latin America and was destined for the company "Arbi Garden", owned by Arbër Çekaj.

The Supreme Court has also sealed the sentences for Çekaj's two associates, citizen Donaldo Lushaj who has been sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison and Armando Pezaku who will serve 8 years and 8 months in prison.

The drugs were seized on February 28, 2018 at the Port of Durres and constitute the largest quantity of cocaine ever seized in the country. The quantity was divided into 528 different packages, each with distinctive markings.

The Prosecution's investigations have revealed that Arbër Çekaj is the organizer of the entire drug trafficking operation, including the ordering, dispatch, transportation and arrival of the narcotics in Albania.

We recall that Arbër Çekaj's father, citizen Selim Çekaj, was later arrested after 49 kg of cocaine was found in a container of bananas ordered by the company he managed, but he was later released.

Arbër Çekaj was also sentenced to 1 year in prison for the escape attempt with Fatmir Pjetri, where on August 8, 2021 they exited the ventilation area and then, using a rope made of sheets, descended to the space in front of the prison gate, but were unable to escape the enclosure.
