Sitting next to each other, this is the last photo of the two elderly men together.
One of them Zyhdi Shehi came out of the asylum with handcuffs, while the other Virgil Vesho was taken from there lifeless, first taken to a funeral agency as an elderly man who had died for natural causes and then brought to the morgue as a friend killed.
When the investigation team has revealed the outline of what happened at the old people's home on Ali Visha Street, and when the perpetrator is being treated in the psychiatric hospital by order of the Court, the Prosecution has administered the files of two elderly people, one with Parkinson's and dementia, and data on administrators.
What the Prosecutor's Office has been asking for in recent hours is the seizure of the cards of employees, to understand whether or not they meet the conditions to serve as caretakers of the elderly. He also administered the testimony of the doctor employed in the private asylum, who was informed by the two nurses under investigation of the event. Nazmie Mulla and Glesantina Sarachin say that after seeing the victim injured, they had thought he had fallen accidentally.
"I did not appreciate having to check the body," the nursing home doctor declares in the file, "after they told me that the elderly man had collapsed and I asked them to notify the funeral agency."
A former employee who worked as a nurse, on condition of anonymity, tells Top Channel after the crime what the conditions are.
Former nurse: I had the nurse position, but not all of them were licensed. They were working even if they had a nursing school and that's it. The elderly were not selected, a family brought an elderly person directly. The capacity was full, there were times when we decided to sleep two patients in a bed at night. With the night shift there are two nurses and it is impossible to check on all patients, while the rule is that every elderly person should be checked every hour at night.
Why did they tie up the elderly?
Former nurse: It's not allowed, family members don't know because they wouldn't leave their father or in that state. Many patients who were unmanageable, those on the nursing floor, were ordered to tie them up because we found them knocked down or killed.
But the only institution that should check public and non-public centers for the elderly is the State Health Inspectorate, which contacted by TCH refused to report whether or not after the event it started checking this center.
Former nurse: As long as I was, none of the institutions came to check. Hygiene, food and personnel had to be checked. The food was not high quality. During the night, patients would get up and ask for bread because they usually consumed milk and yogurt. Some of them were fed through syringe. They also consumed bread with eggs and cheese. The conditions were quaint, the sanitation was zero.
There is only one graph made by ALSAI on asylums in Albania and he recommends many changes from the caregivers to the legal package that should be intervened.
