A day after Independence Day celebrations, Albania marks today the 81st anniversary of its Liberation from Nazi invaders. The country's top leaders are paying homage at the National Martyrs' Cemetery, honoring the sacrifice of those who fought for the country's freedom. Among those present are President Bajram Begaj, Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Speaker of Parliament, Niko Peleshi.

Prime Minister Rama conveyed his congratulations through a post on social media, sharing a photo from the "Mother Albania" Memorial.

"With congratulations on the national liberation holiday, I wish you all a peaceful weekend," Rama writes.

Albania was liberated on November 28, 1944, after five years of occupation that began with the Italian aggression of April 7, 1939 and continued under German control after Italy's capitulation in 1943.
