Modern slavery towards England/ Daily Mail: Over 12 thousand Albanians crossed

More than 12,000 Albanians have arrived in the UK during 2022 so far, of which around 10,000 are thought to be unmarried young people, while according to statistics of those seeking asylum, only 12% are successful.

However, the number of Albanian migrants claiming to be victims of modern slavery is expected to double this year to 5,000. Of the 4,171 victims of modern slavery referred to the Ministry of the Interior in the second quarter of the year, 27% were Albanians, the highest of any nationality.

The Modern Slavery Act was introduced by Theresa May in 2015 when she was home secretary to protect victims of human trafficking gangs, but according to British media the law has many flaws, while Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick told The Telegraph that the Albanians were 'abusing' the act and delaying their deportation efforts.

One of the issues with the legislation, critics say, is its open definition of what constitutes modern slavery. Newcomers can successfully claim asylum just by saying they are victims of slavery, even without any supporting evidence.
