The detainees of Elbasan prison have sent an open letter to several institutions such as the People's Advocate, the American embassy and some of the European Union, the Helsinki Committee and the Democratic Party, denouncing the difficult conditions they are facing.

The detainees summarized the problems in 11 points, which are quoted below in the jargon.

"1. The food is stolen, the rations are not even for babies. 2. People sleep on the floor without mattresses because they only give their friends mattresses, pillows, etc. But the beggars can die 3. We don't have medical care, we ask for a visit to the doctor or to be taken to the hospital, they barely take us, but in most cases they don't take us, nor do they crack our heads, instead of tranquilizers they give us distilled water. 4. Detainees who work do not know their working days, they deceive them. 5. We have no freedom of action at all, only the third floor of building A has freedom and the second floor of building B, we are the second floor, building A. The director and the police chief have given their friends freedom of action. 6. The noises made by the third floor are terrible and we complain, but no action is taken. The prison has been turned into a private prison. 7. They throw water and garbage at us from above. 8. Medicines are not given to us. 9. Hygiene is ZERO. 10. They mistreat us. 11. They deprive us of meetings with family members", were points quoted in the letter.

Meanwhile, they also accuse the director of that institution, Arben Xhina, of nepotism and the head of the prison regime, Vladimir Skenderi, who, among other things, is accused of "having all his cousins and friends" among the guards.

The detainees of Elbasan close the letter saying that "we are indeed in prison, but we also have our rights as human beings".
