The increase in onion exports to the countries of the region has caused the price of this product to increase significantly in the local market, making farmers happy but burdening consumers.

In Korça, 1 kg of onion is being sold for 150 lek retail, an unusual price for this product, which is massively produced in the southeastern region.

The reason for the increase in the price is the shortage in the market since the onion was sold in bulk for export to North Macedonia and Kosovo, making the farmers have more benefits.

Gëzim Kreka from the village of Orman i Maliqi, a producer of onions for many years, claims that he has sold this year's production for the local market at double the price, reaching up to 80 lek per kilogram and that the demand has been high.

In Maliq, according to the data, the area cultivated with onions is about 800 ha and it seems that this year the sale has satisfied the farmers who for years have thrown away the onion due to the lack of market.

According to official data, the area cultivated with onions during the year 2022 in the district of Korça was 1994 ha, increasing compared to 2021, but this year the demand was high in the market, bringing an increase in the price./Tch
