The capo of Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia in Italy, one of the most wanted criminals in Europe and fugitive from justice for 30 years, Matteo Messina Denaro, was arrested yesterday in a private clinic.

The word mafia is an increasingly popular term in the Latin American region.

What makes a criminal structure referred to as a "mafia"?

For two decades, Albanian criminal organizations have done business with Latin American cartels.

Albanians have established contacts with drug-trafficking groups in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, without the need for a command of many men and high-caliber weapons, such as Latin American cartels.

In June 2022, the Anti-Drug Police of Peru seized 2.2 tons of cocaine that was to be transported by sea to the Netherlands, the drug was camouflaged in asparagus canapés for export that were transported in a truck from Trujillo to Callao;

Seven Peruvians were arrested, two of whom were Albanians, Franc Malo and Gentjan Meta, who entered the country illegally through Huaquilla, on the border with Ecuador, in November 2021.

Several press reports, citing information from the Mexican government's security cabinet, indicate that "El Mayo" Zambada formed an association for money laundering purposes with members of the Hysa brothers' clan. With their help, they set up front companies, casinos, restaurants and an export company in the states of Baja California, Quintana Roo and Sonora, according to intelligence documents.

But Albanian criminals not only have strong ties to "El Mayo" Zambada, but also to the Jalisco Cartel - New Generation (Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación - CJNG), according to intelligence sources, suggesting an increase in illegal operations in America. LATIN
