One cannot label a nation with several individuals. Detina Zalli, the Albanian professor at Harvard University for science, has reacted after sensational news in Britain about Albanian immigrants.
She says that she felt bad about the labels that were given to Albanians, describing them as criminals. Zalli shows her journey to get where she is and proudly says that she is Albanian.
POST:
Over the past few days, I have been saddened by the way the UK media has referred to Albanians so negatively, labeling them “criminals. "It brought back memories of when I was 13 and the other kids at my school routinely referred to me as 'a criminal' for fleeing to the UK to escape the civil war. This went on for three years straight. Every day. I was devastated, I lacked self-esteem and my life had no meaning. Twenty years have passed, and during that time I have been blessed to work at some of the most prestigious universities in the world, including Harvard University, Oxford University and Cambridge University.
I was the youngest post-doctoral scientist at Harvard, taught undergraduate and graduate courses, won many fellowships, and collaborated with Nobel laureates. But most importantly, I have impacted the lives of more than 10,000 students from low socio-economic backgrounds in the UK, USA, India, China and Eastern Europe. I have helped refugees, immigrants and cancer patients (and will continue to do so).
Yes. And I am Albanian. As a child, I could not defend myself. I feel it is important to speak up to save other Albanian children who go to UK schools and who may experience bullying. I hope the UK media reflects on this. As I often say: "No matter where you are from. We all speak the same language. The language of DNA!"
My name is Detina. I am Albanian just like Mother Teresa was. I have worked at some of the most prestigious universities in the world. But for me the biggest promotion is being "THE MAN". Barack Obama once said, "Be the change we seek." Let's be the Change by embracing the Inclusion and Diversity that gives us Beauty and Strength! And always remember: "No matter where you are from, we speak the same language. The language of DNA! "- she writes on the social network Facebook.
Albanian immigrants are the main topic of the British media in recent days, which has brought a fierce clash between Prime Minister Edi Rama and the British Home Secretary, Suella Braverman. Suella Braverman said only a few days ago that Albanians were bringing crime to Britain and that they should leave the country as soon as possible. While Rama emphasized that he could not tolerate Braverman's reaction, which he considered "crazy" and a behavior that feeds xenophobia. He called on them to stop 'discriminating' against Albanians in an attempt to justify policy failures in Britain.
