Official Athens seems to have not retreated at all from its harsh stance towards Albania, regarding the "Beleri" issue, even after two interviews of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who was given the opportunity to clarify his position for the Greek media.

The Foreign Minister of Greece, Jorgo Gjerapetriti, spoke today with the same threatening rhetoric about the blocking of Albania's membership in the EU, if the Beleri issue is not resolved.

He has said that this is a matter of political will, and has nothing to do with justice, accusing that Beller's presumption of innocence is being violated.

The Greek Foreign Minister has said that he has brought this matter to the attention of the EU's top politicians, including the head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.

The message of the Greek Foreign Minister:

The case of Fredis Beleri, the temporary unjust detention, which prevents his swearing in as Mayor of Himara, has already been raised by the Foreign Ministry, by me, in all possible forums. All the ministers of the EU member states, the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU and the Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Stoltenberg, have been informed personally. The European Commission and the European Parliament have also been fully informed.

I also had the opportunity to have an extensive one-on-one discussion with the Commissioner responsible for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, with whom we raised the issues of the Western Balkans. Greece, as you know, has taken the initiative to accelerate the path of the Western Balkans towards the European family. And Greece will always be a helper, 20 years after the historic Thessaloniki Declaration, of these countries in terms of their European perspective.

Especially in the case of Mr. Beleri, I want to emphasize that, regardless of the issue of the judicial crisis, the independence of the Albanian judiciary, here comes the issue of detention that prevents him from taking office. This is a clear violation of the presumption of innocence, the rule of law, civil rights and the Himariot citizens who elected him. And I want to emphasize that this issue, especially the oath and assumption of duty by Mr. Beleri, has nothing to do with the judicial function in Albania, but is simply a matter of political will, on the part of the Albanian government. And for this reason, Greece will continue to exhaust every difference, in order to make possible the swearing in of the mayor Mr. Beleri.
