The death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on March 1, 2026 marks a pivotal chapter in the history of world politics, reflecting a series of examples of world leaders who have lost governance through foreign military interventions.

According to Iranian state media, 86-year-old Ali Khamenei died after a US-Israeli coordinated operation on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

The mission, codenamed "Operation Epic Wrath," used stealth aircraft and bunker-penetrating munitions to strike the fortified residential compound in Tehran, where his alleged location was.

Intelligence claims the strikes targeted an underground command center where the leader was based. After holding supreme authority since 1989, Khamenei's death immediately led to the imposition of a 40-day mourning period and the activation of a transition council to avoid a total vacuum in the leadership of the Islamic Republic.

1. Muammar Gaddafi (Libya)

Muammar Gaddafi was killed on October 20, 2011 near his home city of Sirte during the final stages of the Libyan Civil War.

After 42 years of rule, a large convoy attempting to escape was hit by NATO aircraft, including an American Predator drone and French jets.

Gaddafi was captured and killed by rebel fighters.

NATO's intervention marked the end of his rule and long conflicts with Western powers.

2. Saddam Hussein (Iraq)

Following the invasion of Iraq by the US-led coalition in 2003, Saddam Hussein was captured by US special forces on December 13, 2003, at a farm near Tikrit.

After a three-year trial for crimes against humanity, he was executed in Baghdad on December 30, 2006.
