US Intelligence Report: Albania Remains Target of Cyberattacks from Iran

The annual US Intelligence Report for 2026 once again raises the alarm about growing threats in global cyberspace, emphasizing that countries such as China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, as well as ransomware groups, will continue to pose a critical risk to digital infrastructures and networks.

In this panorama, Albania is directly mentioned as one of the countries that has been the target of Iranian attacks.

According to the report, Iran remains an active actor in cyber operations, using digital attacks as a tool for espionage and pressure on adversaries.

The document emphasizes that Tehran has previously targeted countries with weaker cyber defenses, including Albania, which puts official Tirana on the map of ongoing threats.

The report assesses that Iran has demonstrated the ability to carry out effective attacks on unprotected targets, while continuing to maintain the aim of striking not only the United States, but also its allies.

Although Iran faced difficulties in the face of Israeli cyberattacks during the last 12-day conflict in 2025, it remains committed to developing its digital capabilities.

Another worrying element highlighted in the report is the role of Iran-linked groups, including “hacktivists,” who can carry out cyberattacks in a more decentralized manner. Although these groups are usually less technically advanced, they increase the volume of attacks and create ongoing insecurity.

In one specific case cited in the report, an Iranian-linked hacker group claimed responsibility for an attack on a US medical technology company, claiming to have wiped 200,000 systems and obtained 50 terabytes of data. This case illustrates the scale of damage that modern cyber operations can cause.

Globally, the report identifies China as the largest and most persistent threat in the cyber domain, while Russia remains an advanced actor with sophisticated offensive and intelligence capabilities.

However, for countries like Albania, the Iranian threat remains more tangible and direct.

The report highlights that state cyber actors continuously invest in research and development to advance their capabilities, including pre-deploying tools within critical systems that can be activated in times of crisis for destructive attacks.

For Albania, this analysis reinforces the need to increase cyber defense capacities and strengthen cooperation with international partners. Its mention in the US Intelligence report is a clear indication that the threats are not theoretical, but concrete and ongoing.

At a time when wars are not only fought on the ground, but also in the digital space, Albania remains on the front line of an invisible front, where national security is increasingly linked to the protection of networks and data.
