A vacation in Albania for Dutch couple Perry and Annelies turned into a tense legal experience after a minor collision with their rental car.
According to Perry's account for Detelegraaf, while parking near a hotel in Gjirokastra, he crashed into another car. Initially, the incident seemed minor, but the situation escalated when the police arrived and the road was blocked. Although the breathalyzer test came back 0.0, Perry was forced to go to the police station.
The situation was further complicated by the fact that, according to the tourist, the car he hit belonged to a senior local politician. Perry ended up spending 10 days in a cell, where conditions were harsh, with lights on all day and limited communication with his family. The Dutch embassy stepped in to provide consular assistance.
The court decided that 10 days in jail was sufficient, with a bail of 5,000 euros. In addition to the sentence, Perry had to pay the lawyer's fees, the other party's hospital expenses and the damages to the car.
The couple are warning other tourists to be careful when traveling to Albania, especially those using rental cars. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that traffic incidents can escalate quickly and police can detain drivers pending trial.
