From housework, including cleaning and cooking to childcare, Albanian women spend 343 minutes or 5.7 hours each day of unpaid work.

Compared to men, this indicator is six times lower. Compared to the average of European countries, unpaid time for Albanian women is 2.2 times higher.

"It also has to do with the gender gap still present in Albania that women are seen as responsible or caretakers of the family rather than as a person who can leave the house and bring income", said Eranda Ymerali, labor market expert.

A newly published report of the High State Control on the economic empowerment of women shows that the latter still face gaps in the labor market. KLSH assesses that especially in rural areas, women face both closed doors and low payments, while policies for their empowerment mostly remain on paper.

"This is because the jobs offered in rural areas are mainly related to fashion and agriculture. Both of these job profiles do not pay much, so in some way they become unattractive", added Ymerali.

Data from the Institute of Statistics show that at the end of last year, the unemployment rate among women in the country was 11.8 percent, compared to only 6.4 percent in European countries.

At a time when the market is in need of employees more than ever, experts advise the inclusion of women to face the crisis that is coming and deepening./ A2
