Why wasn't Martin Cani sent to QSUT? Journalist: There were signs of life
Martin Cani

Journalist Osman Stafa has denounced the scandal with the transport of 14-year-old Martin Cani to the Trauma hospital and not to the QSUT hospital, which was much closer and had the right equipment and doctors for that case.

The reporter explains that Martin lost a lot of time, being 3 minutes away from Cardiac Surgery and was taken to Trauma.

Martin was sent to a hospital (Trauma) that does not have the equipment to treat his case.

Martini was sent with a stab wound to the heart, to a hospital that does not have a cardiac surgeon.

If the ambulance had responsibly transported him to the right hospital, maybe today Martini could be alive.

"According to the testimony of the lady who transported 14-year-old Martin Cani to the hospital, the ambulance took the boy from her vehicle, near the QSUT. (Bar Oslo, witnesses say. From there to QSUT, the ambulance takes 3 minutes or less).

But the ambulance takes Martin Canin to the Trauma Hospital. So many more minutes. Think for yourself from QSUT, to Trauma plus traffic.

Why does the ambulance take the boy and head to the Trauma Hospital?

Why towards Trauma when a few minutes away was QSUT and specialists?

Because with a scandalous order of the former Minister of Health Ogerta Manastirliu, when she was in office, it was decided that all emergencies will go to the Trauma Hospital. It was different before, when stabbings, screwdrivers in the heart, etc., went to QSUT. And doctors of that hospital do not remember a patient losing his life with a heart attack, in cases where they got to the hospital alive. But this order has caused even those with heart attacks to head towards Trauma.

Could trauma surgeons handle Martin's case?

First, the Trauma Hospital does not have a Cardiac Surgeon. Therefore, the 14-year-old was not given help in Trauma by a cardiologist, but by general surgeons.

According to my sources, the 14-year-old had blood accumulation (from the stroke) in the heart and air in the chest. Thoracic drainage is a procedure routinely performed by general surgeons. So it is a procedure to remove accumulated blood, in cases where there is trauma to the heart. But that much can be done at Trauma.

After this moment, the patient needs to enter what is needed extracorporeal circulation.

The apparatus that performs this process is called the Heart-Lung Device or Extracorporeal Circulation Machine. This device temporarily shuts down the heart, performing its own process.

This gives the heart surgeon time to repair the damaged heart. Without this device, no heart intervention can be done.

So the heart-lung device is located in the operating room in Cardiac Surgery at QSUT. It is installed there. This device can be installed on the patient in 5-6 minutes. This makes it possible to stabilize the tensions and the surgeon proceeds with the smooth repair afterwards. Meanwhile, the device does not allow blood to be lost, as it is absorbed by the device and then the device returns it to the patient.

And the TRAUMA HOSPITAL DOESN'T HAVE THIS EQUIPMENT. IT IS ONLY FOUND IN CARDIOSURGERY AT QSUNT. SO NO MATTER WHAT THE TRAUMA DOCTORS DID FOR MARTIN'S CASE, THEY COULDN'T REPAIR THE HEART WITHOUT THIS DEVICE.

According to my sources, if the patient had been put on a pump or extracorporeal circulation, there was a real chance of survival. If it is not put on the pump and then the heart is repaired, death is certain.

So if he would have received help in Cardiac Surgery at QSUT, he would have had the advantage of both time and equipment, which are not available at Trauma.

But of course, doctors say that survival also depends on other factors. For example, how much blood has he lost, and has he made an arrest or not?

But experienced doctors say that even the lost blood is recovered from the moment of drainage of the chest in the emergency, with another device, which is called "Cell Saver", which absorbs the blood, cleans it and gives it back to the patient.

I don't know if Martin Cani would have succeeded if he had gone to Cardiac Surgery at QSUT from the beginning.

But the facts are these:

At Trauma there is no cardiologist
Trauma does not have the heart-lung equipment
Qsut was 3 minutes away, Trauma more than 10 minutes away. (depending on the traffic)
According to the witnesses, the boy was handed over to the ambulance with signs of life," explains the journalist.

The journalist calls for the Prosecution to investigate the case.

He further states that it is scandalous that the Ministry of Health has not repaired this order that cost the life of Ogerta Manastirli.

"How can it be when all the specialists that our health has are at QSUNT, and emergencies must go to the Trauma Hospital?

How can you take patients who have had stab wounds, screwdrivers, etc. to the heart to Trauma, and get them there, when the Cardiac Surgeon is in the ICU, along with the tools he needs to save the patient's life ?"- concludes the journalist.
