Protest 89/ “Concrete is becoming the form of power” - Architect:
Architect Doriana Musaj

Architect Doriana Musaj, present at the 89th citizen protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office, criticized the approach of Edi Rama's government regarding construction, asking what all this massive construction has produced in our country.

From the square, she said that the government carried out construction without criteria in Tirana, on the coast, affected protected areas and is now moving towards the mountains, mentioning the much-criticized initiative, the Mountain Package.

"Concrete for them is not just a building material, it is their strength. When concrete becomes a form of power, it constantly seeks new territory. It did not spare the old city, the villas, the old neighborhoods of Tirana, the gardens between the palaces. Then they left the city, went to the agricultural lands. I go to the coast, Zvërnec and to the lagoons. And now with the mountain package, they are climbing towards the forests and mountains, a model that seeks the future territory that can be turned into a construction site.

Change of plans, special statuses, strategic investor, law 21/24 and instruments that speak in every letter for development. When the government uses its power to open up territory to an interest and then puts it in front of the community that lives there, the strategic investor becomes leverage. What has all this construction produced? We have built more apartments, but a young couple has a hard time buying one of them. Young people continue to leave.

"We have turned agricultural land into wasteland. Who is buying all this? The population is falling, young people are leaving, families are getting smaller while we continue to build as if Albania is filling up with people? Billions of euros are being poured into concrete without asking enough where this money comes from," said Musai.

She also criticized the way the traffic problem in Tirana has been handled, saying that responsibility has been shifted to citizens.

"The mayor taught us to ride our bikes, to leave the car at home. We became the problem. We create traffic, we take the car, we park badly, we don't know how to circulate ," said the architect.

Meanwhile, a citizen present at the protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office expressed his concern about the political situation, while calling for the cancellation of the law on protected areas. The citizen then focused on the problems of Tirana, mentioning the lack of space, air and heavy traffic.

According to him, the new path being followed by citizens can bring hope for the protection of the territory.

"We have understood that there is no point in Rama in prison, without Berisha or vice versa. Informal violence and that organized by law will continue. Albania needs a revolution. There is a lack of air, spaces, heavy traffic. All of this is done with permits and by law. Despite the permits being approved, implementation is not done. So I think that the new path we are following brings hope for the territory. Cancel the law on protected areas," he said.
