A serious incident has occurred in Milan, where a Local Police officer, Francesco Imprezzabile (39 years old), lost his life during a police chase that ended in an accident.
According to Italian media, the incident began on Monday evening in the suburban area of Ponte Lambro, when a rented Audi Q7 vehicle disobeyed a stop order at a police checkpoint and sped away. Inside the vehicle were two Albanian citizens.
A pursuit was immediately organized by the Imprezzabile officer on a service motorcycle, supported by traffic police patrols. The pursuit continued towards Peschiera Borromeo, east of Milan.
At around 9:00 PM, under circumstances that are still unclear, the policeman lost control of his motorcycle and crashed on Via Milano, near Milano Linate Airport. He was rushed to Ospedale Niguarda, but did not survive his injuries.
The next morning, the vehicle used in the escape was found abandoned in Pioltello, about 10 kilometers from the scene of the accident. Shortly afterwards, authorities identified and detained the driver along with another person in the province of Monza and Brianza, during a joint operation by local police.
Investigations are focusing on how the fatal crash occurred, examining several leads: from the possibility of contact between the motorcycle and the fleeing vehicle, to the version of a deliberate hit. Witnesses and other patrols have failed to document the exact moment of the accident.
The Milan prosecutor's office has opened criminal proceedings for "road murder" and "dangerous escape from the police", while official reports and autopsy results are awaited to fully clarify the dynamics of the event.
The incident has caused strong reactions in Italy. President Sergio Mattarella has expressed shock at the loss of the officer's life, while Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other representatives of the institutions have conveyed condolences to his family and colleagues.
