Germany's secret plan for war with Russia

A 1,200-page classified document shows that Berlin is preparing for the worst-case scenario: a possible conflict with Moscow within a few years.

Germany is moving at an accelerated pace to implement a secret military plan for a possible conflict with Russia, writes  the Wall Street Journal .

The plan, known as OPLAN DEU, is a classified document of around 1,200 pages, drafted by a group of senior German officers over more than two years at the Julius Leber garrison in Berlin.

The document describes a gigantic logistical operation that would center on German territory: the movement of up to 800,000 German, American and NATO troops eastward in the event of a Russian aggression.

It specifies the ports, railways, highways, bridges, and critical points that would be used to send forces to the front, as well as the means of protecting them during transit.

According to the WSJ analysis, the plan marks Germany's return to a Cold War-era mentality, where the distinction between the civilian and military spheres begins to fade.

In addition to military capacity challenges, Berlin must repurpose or rebuild civilian infrastructure for potential military use – from ports to highways that were once designed as emergency landing strips.

German officials warn that Moscow could be ready to challenge NATO by 2029, while recent intelligence and sabotage actions in Europe raise concerns that a clash could come even sooner.

The German government has already launched joint exercises with the civilian sector, logistical testing, and rapid infrastructure modernizations, while private firms like Rheinmetall are being directly incorporated into the new defense architecture.

"The goal is not war," the Wall Street Journal quotes one of the plan's authors as saying, "but its prevention, by making it clear that an aggression against us will not succeed."
