The Durrës Prosecutor's Office has seized a series of documents related to the investigations it is conducting into the causes of the floods in the coastal city.

At the center of the verifications being carried out since January 8 is the functioning of this city's hydropower plant and the tender procedure followed for its award.

The prosecution has registered investigations for the criminal offenses of "Abuse of office", "Destruction of property by flooding" and "Destruction of property by negligence".

The investigation, as the prosecution said in an official communication, aims to discover whether the cause of the floods is related solely to natural issues, or to dereliction of duty and negligence.

The Durrës region has been facing massive flooding for days following heavy rainfall. Preliminary analyses of field verifications indicate that 5,800 homes have been affected, with the former swamp area being the most problematic.
