The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has arrested the Albanian Armando Pacani, who was being investigated in Brazil for running a Brazilian criminal organization that sent cocaine to Europe.

Pacani was on the Interpol red list and was arrested on the 29th in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Brazil has 30 days to send the official request for his extradition.

According to a document from the Federal Public Ministry, Pacani was the recipient of a large part of the 17 tons of pure cocaine that the criminal group based in the ports in the south of the country sent to Europe over a two-year period, valued at 3.8 billion dollars.

According to the MPF, the group sent at least 13 loads of cocaine from Andean countries, from the ports of Rio Grande, in Rio Grande do Sul and Itajaí, in Santa Catarina. Drugs were hidden in legal cargo containers, without the knowledge of the owners of the goods, or left on fishing vessels.

One of the shipments was seized by the French navy near Sierra Leone in November 2022. The fishing boat was carrying 4.6 tons of cocaine in about a hundred suitcases. The operation was a joint action between the US DEA, the European Union Agency for Police Cooperation (Europol) and the French authorities.

The investigation revealed that a Paraguayan citizen was supplying loads of cocaine bought in Bolivia to the owners of maritime logistics companies in southern Brazil, who were shipping them to Europe. The drug entered through the border with Paraguay, in the region of Pedro Juan Caballero and Ponta Porã, crossed several states by truck, until it reached the south, from there it was sent to European buyers.

Pacani was appointed as responsible for monitoring the "logistics of the international drug traffic, from the supply to the Andean countries, through storage and work at the port, maritime transport, until receiving in Europe". He had been on the run since the Federal Police launched Operation Hinterland in March last year. Known by the code names Albanês, Forbes and Globe, Pacani is charged with the crimes of drug trafficking, money laundering and criminal organization.
