In Albania, today is the first day of the new academic year, but public university lecturers protested, abandoning the teaching process.
After welcoming the new students in the morning, the lecturers gathered in front of the faculties to request the completion of 9 points of their petition addressed to the government.
At the center of the demands is a 50 percent increase in basic salaries for lecturers and support staff.
The Ministry of Education declared today to the "Voice of America" that it remains open to dialogue on the demands of the teachers' unions, as well as issues related to scientific research and higher education.
The professors of the public universities started the announced protest today, since the government, according to them, has not met the demands announced for a long time.
They claim that they are demoralized by the minimal and insufficient financial treatment, with lectures being paid 4-7 euros.
The professors affirmed that they are determined to continue with their repeated demands over the years, which they consider minimal to restore the dignity of lecturers, who have been paid at low levels over the years, as well as academic support staff.
"The demands are very fair for the lecturers, for the academic support staff, and for the administration. We work together every day and we know how much these points are necessary for all of us. They are a starting point, not a maximum assessment of our work. They are the basis to motivate lecturers and academic staff and academic assistants, to focus on their work and to keep them here in the universities" - says pedagogy Valma Prifti of the University of Tirana.
The Ministry of Education has recently notified the rectors of the universities through a letter regarding the results of the talks with the representatives of the lecturers on September 23, on the agreement regarding some of the points of the petition, which are related to the periodic implementation of the law.
“Ne duam t’i shpëtojmë universitetet tona.
On October 5, the government increased the salaries of lecturers to 15%, 7% of which will be covered by the state budget starting this month, while the rest will be covered by the universities themselves from the income of each of them./VOA
