After 17 years on the run, 66-year-old Bardhyl Haxhiu has been arrested in Albania. Haxhiu has been on the run since 2008 and was an international wanted man. He was arrested yesterday, April 29, in the city of Fier.

It is reported that the Naples Court of Appeal has sentenced the Albanian to 24 years in prison for serious crimes related to international drug trafficking.

He was identified as an active part of a criminal organization dedicated to international heroin trafficking, operating in the provinces of Naples and Caserta. According to the investigation, he played a central role in the structure, acting as the main contact for the importation into Italy of large quantities of drugs, for a total exceeding 130 kg of heroin.

The arrest was made possible thanks to a complex investigative activity coordinated by the Office of the Attorney General and carried out by the Investigation Unit of the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri of Naples, in collaboration with the Albanian police authorities. Haxhiu is currently being held in a prison in Albania, awaiting extradition procedures in Italy, where he will have to serve his entire sentence.

The operation represents a significant success for Italian justice and for the fight against drug trafficking, the result of synergy between judicial authorities and police forces at an international level.
