European Parliament adopts new asylum rules: What it means for Albania

The European Parliament has approved changes to EU rules on asylum procedures, paving the way for speeding up the processing of applications for international protection and for the creation of a common list of safe countries of origin.

According to the decision, several countries – including Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco and Tunisia – will be considered safe countries, meaning that asylum applications from citizens of these countries will be processed through an accelerated procedure.

The changes also provide that countries that are in the process of joining the EU will be considered safe countries in principle, while the European Union will monitor the situation and may propose their removal from the list if conditions change.

The new rules also allow member states to conclude agreements with third countries for the processing of asylum applications outside EU territory.

In this context, Albania is also mentioned, with which Italy has an agreement on migrant treatment centers.

Under the new rules, asylum applications can be declared inadmissible if the applicant has connections to a third country, has passed through it before entering the EU or if there is an international agreement for the processing of applications, with the exception of cases of unaccompanied minors.

The decision was approved by a majority vote, while right-wing parties and the European People's Party supported it, arguing that the changes will speed up procedures and increase control over migration.

On the other hand, MEPs from the Greens and the Left have opposed the decision, warning that the changes could weaken the right to asylum and lead to faster rejections of requests for international protection.
