Since 2004, teachers' salaries have not increased, even from the 6% salary increase scheme for education workers, higher education is excluded.

The head of the union of university employees, Sandër Kovaçi, says that lecturers are ready to boycott classes next year because their salaries are absurd and they are sinking into poverty.

"You cannot have quality teaching at the university if you do not have good financial treatment of the lecturer. It was requested by the trade union, that is, it was accepted by the lecturers to boycott the beginning of the academic year. 50% of the academic staff, exactly that assistant receives the salary of the high school level, for the reason that the high schools mainly had early rise from time to time and the universities stayed in place. For the professor it is 12-13 thousand lek despite the taxes, so the old 10-11 thousand lek are deducted for the taxes, for associate professors 12 thousand, for the assistant 8 thousand lek", Kovaçi told Report TV

Professor Kovaçi puts the main emphasis on other issues of higher education where he sees the urgent need for funding from the state for research work.

"Scientific research is very little subsidized to the extent of 0.04% of the GDP budget for scientific research, while Serbia and Macedonia have 10 times more than us. It is an emergency," he added.

According to the head of the union of university employees, Albania has the lowest salaries in the region for lecturers and almost 40% lower than in the public universities of the Republic of Kosovo.
