Billionaire Bill Gates says we have not yet seen the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the world reopened after two years of living with the virus.

Gates has warned that there is a risk of over five percent that the world has not yet seen the worst.

The tech mogul and philanthropist said he did not want to sound bad, but warned that there was a risk that an even more fatal variant could be created.

He said the risk of this happening is over five per cent and means the world is going to see even worse from the pandemic.

It is not the first time he makes such a prediction. In December 2021, he warned his millions of followers on Twitter to prepare for the worst part of the pandemic, having previously warned in 2015 that the world was not ready for the next pandemic.

"We are still in danger of this pandemic generating a variant that would be even more contagious and even more fatal," he told the Financial Times.

"It's unlikely, I do not want to be a gloomy voice, but it is much higher than a 5 percent risk of not seeing the worst of this pandemic," he added.

Covid-19 has claimed the lives of approximately 6.2 million people worldwide since March 2020, but the number of cases and deaths has dropped in recent weeks.

Gates' warning comes after Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), warned this week that people should not neglect the virus.

Meanwhile, Gates advises governments around the world to invest in a team of epidemiologists and computer modelers to help identify future global health threats.
