African plague, Albania bans the import of pigs and chickens

African swine fever (ASF) is caused by a virus of the Asfaviridae family and is highly contagious, affecting domestic and wild pigs, where the mortality rate can reach up to 100%.

This disease does not pose a risk to human health, but has devastating effects on the pig population and the economy.

Currently, this disease is present in many countries of the EU and the region, such as North Macedonia, Kosovo, Greece, and recently the disease has also appeared in the Republic of Montenegro, in wild pigs.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in order to protect the territory from the entry of the African Swine Fever virus, has taken some immediate measures such as the prohibition and transit in the Republic of Albania of cargoes with live animals, their products, biological material , pig embryos, fresh meat and their by-products, from countries, areas and territories where the disease has appeared, based on notifications received from the World Organization for Animal Health and from the electronic animal disease information system of EU.

Currently, the orders approved for the ASF disease are for the following countries: Kosovo, Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, Estonia, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic , North Macedonia.

The epidemiological situation is monitored daily by the Directorate of Veterinary Policies, and blocking orders are prepared case by case, according to the notifications received.

For the early detection of the disease and prevention of its spread, the National African Swine Fever Disease Surveillance Program has been approved and is being implemented, a program that is implemented throughout the country.

The same principle applies to Avian Influenza (also known as bird flu) as to African Plague.

While the countries for which the blocking of birds, their biological material, eggs, meat and their non-thermally treated by-products has been ordered are Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Bulgaria, Moldova, Slovakia , Romania, Croatia, Spain and Portugal.

The orders are temporary in effect, and once measures are taken to eradicate the disease from these countries and the outbreak is closed to the World Organization for Animal Health system, they will be lifted.

For the early detection and prevention of the spread of this disease, the National Surveillance Program for Avian Influenza has been approved and is being implemented.

The objectives of this program are related to the creation of an active surveillance system and increasing the effectiveness of passive surveillance for the early detection and immediate reporting of the occurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and low pathogenicity (LPAI) viruses in domestic poultry. and wild ones to make it possible to prevent its spread throughout the country. This program is in line with EU requirements.

The Ministry of Agriculture clarifies the public opinion that in our country there are no cases of these diseases and that our structures are following the situation to prevent the spread of the Albanian territory.
