In France, three people died in two separate incidents in the Landes region in the southwest due to icy roads. Two more people died in accidents in the Paris area. One of the accidents was caused by a collision between a car and a heavy truck east of Paris, while another died after a taxi hit a sidewalk due to snow and ended up in the Marne River.

The Balkans have also been hit by heavy snowfall and rain. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said more snowfall was expected in the country tonight and Wednesday, as he urged people to travel as little as possible and work from home.

France's national meteorological service announced that 38 departments will be on orange alert for snow and ice on Wednesday. Many train services have been canceled in various parts of the country.

In the French capital, authorities said Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport would have 40% of flights cancelled for several hours on Wednesday morning to allow staff to clear the runways of snow. Orly airport planned to cancel a quarter of flights during the same period.

More than 400 flights were canceled at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Wednesday, causing major chaos for travel plans. Hundreds of passengers were stranded, many unable to board their flights. Travelers formed long lines at airline counters to get information about the resumption of flights. Most of the canceled flights were operated by Dutch airline KLM.

At Schiphol airport, many passengers complained about long queues and a lack of information. Spanish passenger Javier Sepulveda, who was trying to fly from Amsterdam to Norway, told Reuters that the situation at the airport was chaotic, unacceptable, frustrating and irritating and completely unacceptable. He added that he had started queuing at the KLM counter at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday and after six hours he was still far from the front of the queue.

Train travel was also disrupted. On Tuesday morning, all train services in the Netherlands were briefly halted due to an IT problem. Some trains resumed service after 9am local time, but problems continued throughout the day. Eurostar services to Paris from Amsterdam were either cancelled or delayed.
