Mosaic discovered in Durres

In durres, the Ministry of Culture took over an area where a rare mosaic was discovered in mid-October this year.

The mosaic came to light when the foundations of a secondary school were being opened, which was to be rebuilt after it was damaged by the November earthquake four years ago.

Archaeologist Luan Përzhita says the mosaic is in very good condition with an area of over 60 square meters.

"We are lucky that the mosaic discovered is in a very good condition. It has decorated the territory of a luxury villa, near the durres amphitheater and as dating time we think it is sometime 1st century BC and early 1st century AD. Today we talk about what we know, but perhaps future developments will have a more accurate date of this mosaic. In itself the mosaic is such, special, also for the city of Durres and for Albania and is part of the further wealth of this ancient heritage that is added to the city as well known as the city of Dyrrah has been in antiquity.

Mr. Përzhita further says that the area carries archaeological value but has been affected by constructions over the years.

"It's too soon to talk. What we know is that the high school "Gjergj Kastrioti" was built here in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1940s, a large bunker was built by Italian forces. These constructions, as we have seen, have caused occasional damage to archaeological structures located in this territory. There is also a corner of the school that connects to the part of the mosaic that had the foundations in this part."

Archaeological excavation in the area is fragile, but the cooperation of both state and local structures and the enterprise working to rebuild the school is quite good, says Maringlen Meshini archaeologist in the Salvage Archaeology Sector.

We are in optimal conditions where parallel to the project we have all the possibilities to carry out archaeological excavation of the rescue, which is only one of the phases of this process. After the archaeological excavation is carried out, we will look at the whole situation in a broad context of how these archaeological finds stand, these discoveries, the mosaic itself and other objects in relation to the project and then we will have another decision on the future of this area.

Mr. Meshini further says that the discovery is one of the future postcards of Albanian tourism and cultural heritage.

"For the very nature of this discovery, for the size, for the quality above all and for what it represents in the context where it is being established, let us say that we are dealing with a postcard of tourism and cultural heritage in Advance"

Mr. Perzhita says not only the mosaic but also other archaeological finds are expected to bring more information to the area.

The durres underground occasionally brings new archaeological discoveries, but the overload of constructions in not a few cases has damaged, affecting various historical periods of development of the ancient city. / VOA
