Please take it seriously: Albanians are fleeing!
Albania is dissolving

Albanians are fleeing! This news, in fact, is not new. Since the 90s, many residents of the country left for a better life.

At that time, they fled with whatever they could, by ship, through embassies, then by raft, seriously risking their lives.

At that time it was a practically unstoppable process. Albania came from a dictatorial regime, which had denied many opportunities and led the population to extreme poverty and hunger to see the "world with their own eyes".

The emigration of that period also had its positive sides, as remittances became an important source of income and consumption in the country and many individuals returned, opening businesses and bringing the experience of Europe, mainly Italy and Greece.

The events of '97 prompted another wave of life insecurity, a new driving factor for emigration. The stabilization of the economy after the 2000s slowed down the pace of immigration. The country's economy was growing, there were more opportunities for young people, large foreign companies were entering the country, offering jobs with relatively high wages.

Opening a business in a market where consumption was high was another alternative to make a living.

Visa liberalization with the EU, despite expectations and similar phenomena in former communist countries, was not accompanied by a wave of emigration. On the contrary, another wave of exodus started in the country in 2015.

Asylum requests increased drastically, reaching nearly 70,000 that year. Although in the following decrease, the escapes still remained high, being restrained somewhat during the pandemic period, as a result of the restrictions on movement.

Since the pandemic, the country has once again been involved in a silent cycle of emigration, especially of young people, but also of families, including those classified in the middle class. The phenomenon has become so massive that it is being felt everywhere.

Three years ago, businesses were complaining that they couldn't find employees. Today, they complain that not only are they not finding employees, but the population decline is so strong that it is being felt in curbing consumption.

Otherwise, immigration is expected to cause deeper social and economic imbalances, which cannot be predicted if they can be repaired in the coming decades./ EDITORIAL MONITOR
