Lawyer Ylli Manjani has raised concerns about the state of the penal system in Albania, comparing it to Russian justice standards. According to him, the situation has gotten out of control, as 61% of detained persons are in pre-trial detention, a record figure that shows the degradation of the system.
"There is another dimension that is beyond this discussion of Berisha, Meta, Veliaj, etc. that is also catastrophic. I have held the position of Minister of Justice and it has never happened to us to have 61% of the population in detention. The maximum has been 52-53%. 61% detained, this is the end of criminal justice," said Manjani, describing this phenomenon as a serious threat to the rights and freedoms of citizens.
He also pointed out that the innocence rate in Albania is only 2.2%, a figure almost the same as that of Russia (0.8%) and in stark contrast to the European average of 34%.
"Do you want another piece of information? Innocence! Russia has 0.8%. Do you know how much Albania has? 2.2%. What is the European average? 34%. So, the European Court admits that European prosecutors are wrong. We have 2%, a little better than Russia and a catastrophe in relation to Europe ," he said on Syri TV.
