Three shipments of strawberries with pesticides, imported from Greece, have raised alarm throughout the country. Although contaminated with dangerous pesticides, the strawberries have all been sold, which has caused problems for local farmers.

Farmers in Frakull, Fier, protested today by throwing crates of strawberries into the street, as they believe they are now being penalized.

Some of them said after the news about Greek strawberries, local strawberries have no value in the market.

"It was 2 thousand lek per kilogram and today it is not sold at all. The government should do the analysis and the strawberries come out without pesticides. Local strawberries without pesticides are not being sold because Greek strawberries with pesticides are being sold," said one of the farmers.

"Greece has brought strawberries with pesticides and we are suffering. It has been a difficult year of production and now this is happening. We live by producing and selling strawberries and as things stand, we will be forced to declare bankruptcy," the farmers say.

Farmers told the media that a large part of the production has ended up in the Vjosa River.

"It is unfair to be penalized for something that has nothing to do with us. Our production is organic and safe. The state must help us survive," the farmers said.
