Over a million tourists visit the Lombardy region of Italy each year to see Lake Como and its stunning villas.

Although a trip to Italy is always a good idea, it's worth noting that there are dozens of other equally beautiful (and far less tourist-filled) lake landscapes throughout Europe.

One of them is Lake Ohrid, a still underrated gem that lies between two equally underrated countries: Albania and North Macedonia.

This lake has just been declared the most beautiful place in Europe by Time Out travel journalists .

While Lake Como attracts celebrities and crowds of tourists, Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, offers a quieter and more affordable alternative, without compromising on beauty.

Crystal blue waters, impressive mountains and coastlines filled with historic towns that seem to have been left behind in another era.

On the North Macedonian side, the city of Ohrid is the main attraction, with cobblestone streets, hundreds of medieval churches (it is said that there were once 365 churches, one for each day of the year) and tiled roofs that slope down towards the lake.

There you can spend the day swimming and exploring ancient ruins, and the evening watching the sunsets disappear behind the mountains, without the high prices of Lombardy.

On the Albanian side, the landscape is wilder and more peaceful, with small, sleepy villages.

The village of Lin is known for its ancient mosaics and picturesque waterside campsites, where you can reserve places to relax by the lake.

Time Out's list of the most beautiful places in Europe also includes other destinations such as a unique town with trulli houses in the Puglia region of Italy, Kew Gardens in London and a Gaudi masterpiece in Barcelona.
