The first tests have arrived in Albania to diagnose suspected cases with the monkey line or their contacts. The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Ogerta Manatirliu visited today the reference laboratory at the Institute of Public Health, where she informed that the tests for the monkey line will be performed in Albania.
"In the reference laboratory at the Institute of Public Health we have already made it possible for the first 250 cases that may be suspected, to have specific tests in this laboratory. So, we will have the opportunity that exactly in this laboratory, without taking them to the reference laboratories, we can test suspected cases and also suspected case contacts ", said Manastirliu, adding that the cooperation with the reference laboratories will continue. .
Speaking about the modernization of the IPH laboratory, Manastirliu also said that it is expected to strengthen the capacities with a modern apparatus for genome sequencing, while talking about the new transformation master plan for the Institute of Public Health.
"By autumn we want to have another modern device in the IPH, which is the genomic sequencer. So we will be able to sequence the genome in this laboratory and it is one of the procedures that all reference laboratories have. While with the Institute of Public Health, we are working to complete the master plan of the entire building of the Institute of Public Health, including the central building and a new building that will be the tower of laboratories, including basic laboratories, chemical , biochemical, also virology and microvirology laboratories. It is our most ambitious project that we have for IPH ", said Manastirliu.
Speaking about the epidemiological situation where in recent days there has been an increase in positive cases with Covid-19, Manastirliu appealed to citizens to continue to be vaccinated.
"As the World Health Organization has warned, we will have an increase in cases. Autumn will certainly continue to have its challenges in relation to covid cases, in relation to new variants. But vaccination is the key word. We will continue the vaccination process. We will continue to be throughout the territory. The mobile units are already doing a fantastic job all over the territory, continuing the door-to-door vaccination and capturing exactly those pockets of the population that have not yet been vaccinated with the third dose. "While we have approved the fourth dose", said Manastirliu.
Speaking about the monitoring of the situation for the monkey line, the Director of the Institute of Public Health, Dr. Eugena Tomini said: “Currently we have again an engaged surveillance such as that of the monkey pox, increasing the diagnostic capacities in the Institute of Public Health and moreover the diagnosis is performed on the spot, despite the fact that we have constant communication with the network of reference laboratories in Europe, to confirm the diagnosis ”.
According to the European Center for Disease Control, Albania has a low risk of monkey pox. European countries are already on alert, as there are more than 29 countries where more than 1,700 cases of monkey pox have been reported.
