Unusual letters from women convicted of killing their husbands: We repent, we
Letters from prison

These are not ordinary letters...

They are stories where crime and repentance stand opposite each other... one that has destroyed, the other that can no longer rebuild what was lost...

The envelopes look ordinary. But inside they have stories that strike you without warning.....

Women who once supported families, and a moment that turned them into perpetrators of serious crimes.

These letters, handwritten from inside the women's prison in Pojska, are not simply personal narratives. They are mirrors in which man appears in the face of his own crime.

A difficult confrontation, where nothing is embellished and nothing is hidden.

On every page, it's almost the same story and the same request...

Can there be a second chance?

"A second chance means having the years I have left to atone for the mistakes I have made and live with dignity, in peace with myself and my family," a letter from prison.

"We must understand that women who commit crimes are not antisocial beings, they are people like all of us, who also have a past, a childhood, a youth, they currently have a life that continues for them as well, they have some educational frameworks that begin in the family ," said Entela Bunjaku, sociologist.

"History has shown that returning to society comes with a style that these women have committed such a criminal offense, have taken such an extreme action, and normally their recovery and return to such social life is difficult. Institutions have an essential role from the moment before such an event occurs, until a criminal offense occurs and then the sentence is carried out and a woman is released after serving her sentence," said Nadia Elbasani, a lecturer.

She killed her husband with a crowbar in his sleep, Drania repents: I am devastated, I was separated from my children...

Among the stories that come to Inside Story like letters from a closed world, stands the story of Drane Deda, convicted of murdering her husband.

She doesn't just recount the crime... but the life left behind, like a road of no return, where every step brings you back to the same place.

Because guilt is not just a court decision, it is a shadow that follows you, even when you try to escape it.

"The action has changed me profoundly. It has made me reflect more. I have become calmer, more aware and more repentant. Today I understand better the value of life and the importance of relationships. Conflicts must be resolved through dialogue", letter from prison

The tragedy of Drane did not begin at the moment when the crowbar was raised as a crime tool... but rather in a long marital relationship, which, according to the children's testimonies, was filled with tension, constant alcohol consumption, and episodes of violence that were never reported.

A silent reality that had remained within the walls of the house for years, until the night when everything exploded irreversibly.

In the early morning hours of November 6, 2020, in their apartment in Laç, according to the investigative file, the husband was asleep in bed, never thinking that it would be his last night...

“THE DEFENDANT HIT HER HUSBAND ON THE HEAD WITH A STRONG IMPLEMENT WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING…”

The blows are repeated, strong and concentrated on the head, causing severe injuries that, according to forensic expertise, are fatal.

“FRATURED SKULL BONES… HEMORRHAGIA IN THE BRAIN… LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES…”

But what makes this story even more serious is what happens immediately after the act. According to the defendant herself, she goes out onto the porch and stands there for about an hour, in a confused state, between shock and complete lack of understanding of what had just happened. The victim gathered her strength for a final call in those moments...

"After this moment, Drania went out of the apartment onto the veranda and sat on the sofa, staying there for about an hour because she did not know and did not understand what she had done. At one point, her husband Lleshi called Drane from the bed and then Drania entered the apartment, seeing Lleshi covered in blood. At this moment, Drania left the apartment to surrender to the Police because she realized what she had done.

After leaving the house, he goes to his brother's apartment and there, for the first time, he confesses to the crime. It is his brother's daughter-in-law who describes the moment.

"He came home and told me: 'I couldn't take it anymore... I hit him with my beak and left him there..."

A direct, unvarnished statement, which for investigators reinforces the authorship and clarity of the action taken. But, in parallel with this account, another dimension appears in the file, that of the family relationship.

The couple's children speak of a tense climate for years, of constant arguments, and of a father figure who, according to them, regularly consumed alcohol and had exercised violence against their mother.

"THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PARENTS HAS BEEN BAD FOR A LONG TIME... THERE HAVE BEEN NO LACK OF CASES OF VIOLENCE..."

A reality where violence is often confined within four walls and silence is seen as a way to “preserve the family.” But failure to report is not simply a lack of reaction, but a chain that pushes the tragedy towards its most severe end.

"All these women need to understand that there is a solution, the first one is to seek help when they are abused, this is very important, because there is pressure and the fact that they consider themselves alone and have nowhere to turn. The second one may not find attention from their family of origin, but there are other structures that support them, state structures, they are enough to support the abuser. " said Anila Hoxha, journalist.

A year after the event, inside the cell, the story takes another silent and serious turn. Mirela Buzalli attempts to end her life by consuming a significant amount of chlorine, a desperate act that immediately takes her to the hospital. There she proves that confronting crime does not end with punishment, but continues inside, in a daily struggle with herself.

As in the case of Drane, the same element that unites these stories returns here: unreported violence and the silence that lasts until the moment when everything explodes.

There were ongoing arguments between the spouses, which were also present on the evening of 17.07.2016, when the victim returned home late. Their conflict continued with insults and as a result the spouses slept in different rooms that night, the victim Shkëlzen slept in the older son's room, while the suspect Mirela slept in another room with her daughter.

According to information from Pojska prison, Mirela Buzalli has also written a letter expressing remorse and asking to be included in the amnesty. Unfortunately, despite Inside Story's research, that letter did not reach our editorial office, leaving an unspoken voice, but one that follows the same tone as Drane's... admission of guilt, the weight of the years and the desire to return to her children.

Two stories that are unknown to each other, but that come together on the same line: from silent violence within the family, to crime and then to repentance, as an attempt to apologize for what happened...
