Great news for Albanians, the ambassador: Visas to Great Britain will be eased
The British Ambassador

The Ambassador of the United Kingdom, Alastair King-Smith, called tonight on Top Story for all Albanians not to come to England illegally.

He has stated that all those who are determined to travel to the United Kingdom do so legally, as there are visas that people can apply for.

King-Smith has stated that in order for young people not to run away from the north of Albania, mainly from Kukësi, they will invest there with a new program and new prospects for Kukësi for young people from the professional side.

TOP CHANNEL: Now let's talk about motivation, beyond punishments. Is there any possibility that the visa procedures, i.e. to get a visa for the UK, will be easier, more normal and more accessible for Albanian citizens?

UK Ambassador: So one of our messages is to tell people, don't go illegally. If you are determined to travel to the UK, go legally, and there are visa options for citizens. We have shortages in certain occupations which means there are visa options that people can apply for. This is part of what we will discuss with the government of Albania, to see how we can promote these opportunities better. But also we don't want to just take young people from Albania and that's why we are investing in the north. We launched, as you may have seen, a new program, "New perspectives for the Kukes region" will examine what we can do in Kukes, Diber and elsewhere to really give young people professions, skills and jobs and specifically to bring new economic development to the region, to attract people, both those who want to stay and others, to think that they can actually work and live there. Now, this is something that the two governments will do, but it is also for the private sector. And so we are calling on businesses and others to think about what they can do to help provide these skills and job opportunities for young people.

TOP CHANNEL: This is a 10 million euro or pound project, right?

Ambassador of the United Kingdom: Actually it is 8.4 million pounds, for three and a half years, but we are trying to strengthen and expand it.

Top Channel: So it is focused on Kukës, for the moment.

AMB: At the moment it is in the municipalities of Kukes, Has and Tropoja. It is currently being determined what the possibilities are there. We know that this area has tremendous tourist potential, but what are the real opportunities that can create employment for young people as well? What are the technological possibilities? We know all these jobs in the technology sector that cannot necessarily be done from a certain country. They can be made from anywhere in the world. Why not make them from Kukësi or Dibra?

TOP CHANNEL: So to train people there so that they can have access to the market of technology, IT, and others.

AMB: Exactly. But we know this will take time. So we have to find ways to help people now. So if you are thinking of leaving school this summer, we want you to know that you will have the option here in Albania or the choice to go legally to the UK or elsewhere. But don't go illegally. Because, even though it is seen as an easy path, there are really difficult stories from people who have done this path and realized that they were wrong and have already returned to Albania.

TOP CHANNEL: Is this project managed by the Government of Albania? UK Ambassador: Of course, the big projects we design with governments, but no. This project has been contracted to several organizations. Our main contractor is Sëiss Contact and they also work with other Albanian partners. We want this to be a genuine economic stimulus.

TOP CHANNEL: So it is mainly managed by international organizations? UK Ambassador: Exactly. But it is understood that the projects are also discussed with the municipalities, with the government and with partners who can make a contribution. So for example, we can encourage more training in agriculture or tourism, but grants for agrotourism are given by the Ministry of Agriculture. This is something that can be extended to the Kukes region. So this is the approach that we want to have, to work in partnership.

TOP CHANNEL: Because I was thinking that the creation of some small artificial crises can be positive for the government, which can be the beneficiary of funds from outside Albania to manage our crisis. So this is good news. let's say, good news in terms of transparency.
