Louisiana is becoming the first US state to punish child sex offenders with surgical castration, under a new bill passed.
Although the law is already in place in other countries such as the Czech Republic and Nigeria, it is unprecedented for the US.
Supporters hope this will deter would-be abusers from preying on children. However, the opposition describes the new law as "harsh" and believes that it will find legal obstacles in its implementation.
The sentence is expected to be applied in cases where the victim of the crime is under 13 years old. Among the crimes for which it will be applied are rape, incest and sexual abuse, but the punishment will be imposed each time according to the discretion of the judge.
It should be noted that currently 2,224 people are serving prison sentences for such crimes in Louisiana. But the law will apply to those convicted on or after August 1 of this year.
Already Louisiana, among several other American states, such as California, Florida and Texas, allow chemical castration for those who have been found guilty of certain sex crimes. In some of them, perpetrators can opt for surgical castration, but Louisiana is the first to impose it.
Chemical castration involves drugs that inhibit testosterone production and sexual desire. The surgical one is more invasive, as it involves the removal of the testicles or ovaries.
