Current poverty in Italy is at an all-time high and must be understood as a structural phenomenon of the country. This is highlighted by the statistical report of the Italian Caritas 'Poverty 2024'. Istat's preliminary estimates published last March, and referring to the year 2023, prove that 9.8% of the population, one inhabitant in ten, lives in a state of absolute poverty.

Regarding, especially the elderly, in 2023 Caritas supported 35,875 elderly, equal to 13.4% of the total number of those who requested social assistance. During the last years, there has been a clear increase in the share of the elderly, which went from 7.7% in 2015 to over 13% in 2023.

The number of homeless people is also increasing. In 2023, the homeless supported by the Caritas network were 34,554, corresponding to 19.2% of the total. The value is increasing both in absolute terms and in percentage terms: in 2022 there were 27,877, equal to 16.9% of the total, i.e. 6,677 more homeless compared to 2022 and over 10,500 compared to 2021.

In general, the incidence of foreign persons falls to 57.0% from 59.6%) also due to the disappearance of the Ukrainian presence in the country. Regarding the profile of those seeking help, the Report explains that women – 51.5% and men – 48.5% seek help. The average age is 47.2 years.

Being born and raised in a poor family - notes Caritas - can actually be the prelude to a future and a life characterized in its entirety by a state of deprivation and poverty, also because of the link that exists between economic poverty and poverty educational.

Among those assisted by Caritas, people with a lower secondary school diploma dominate, accounting for 44.3%, those with only a primary school diploma 16.1% and the percentage of those with no educational qualifications or who are illiterate.
