The Supreme Court has rejected Erion Veliaj's appeal against the suspension of his pre-trial detention. The Appeals Court's decision issued on April 29th remains in force.

The decision to suspend the pre-trial detention terms was made in two sessions by the GJKKO, where Veliaj was absent from court due to irregularities by the Durrës Prison Directorate, in the mayor's announcement.

Veliaj himself has called the decision to suspend the detention terms unfair, arguing that he was regularly represented in court by his lawyer.

The practice of suspending pre-trial detention terms for all defendants in a block, due to the absence of one of them, is raising strong debates in the justice system.

Lawyers are demanding changes to the Criminal Procedure Code, arguing that this approach violates individual rights and keeps people in prison who have no responsibility for the delays.

Staying in detention is counted as one and a half days in prison, thus having a direct impact on the calculation of the final sentence served.
