Kosovo marks the 17th anniversary of independence today!

Kosovo marks today the 17th anniversary of its independence, declared on February 17, 2008.

A series of events – from a festive meeting of the country's Government to a parade of Kosovo Security Force troops – are expected during the day, in honor of this anniversary.

Kosovo has just emerged from an electoral process and is awaiting the formation of new institutions.

The Vetevendosje Movement of the current Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, emerged victorious in the February 9 elections, but without securing the necessary majority of 61 MPs to form a single government.

A day earlier, Kosovo's President, Vjosa Osmani, announced that she had received a congratulatory message on the anniversary of independence from United States President, Donald Trump.

It says that Trump "congratulates the people of Kosovo on their journey towards independence" and highlights "the resilience and determination that have accompanied this process."

"The ties between our peoples are strong, and we look forward to expanding them – particularly through increased investment opportunities – in order to bring greater prosperity to both our countries," the letter states, among other things.

Kurti's government has been criticized by American officials in recent years due to several steps considered uncoordinated towards the Serbian community.

Kosovo authorities, among other things, have removed the Serbian dinar from use and closed most of the Serbian institutions from which Serbs received various services.

The government has justified these actions as an extension of its authority and in accordance with the country's laws and Constitution.

But, because of them, the European Union has also taken several punitive measures against Kosovo, suspending several funds and high-level meetings.

The seventeenth anniversary of independence finds Kosovo as a state recognized by about 117 countries around the world.

The country is part of several international organizations, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Olympic Committee, the European Football Association, and the World Football Association.

But, it is not yet in the United Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, etc./ Rel
