Ecuador is experiencing a deep crisis of violence and insecurity. Prison massacres, street killings and violent robberies are facts that are reported every day. The official version claims that the wave of violence is the response to the fight against drug trafficking. However, this version could only justify custom killings and the appearance of corpses, which experts say are practices linked to drug mobsters.
According to the National Police, in Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón, cities on the Ecuadorian coast and where there are seaports where camouflaged drug shipments are found in containers, 86% of crimes occur due to conflicts between drug trafficking gangs, 8% due to of interpersonal violence and 6% for robbery. To these percentages are added collateral victims, who also die or are injured being in places where violence occurs, such as. the juvenile who took a bullet after an attempted assault on the school bus he was traveling in.
The first scenario, of gang-related crimes that respond to drug trafficking and that supports the official version, shows macabre acts that have not been seen, such as beheadings, corpses hanging on bridges, drones with explosives and car bombs, the latest. these erupted in the early hours of Sunday, May 29, in front of a police unit.
Cases of paid murder and premeditated murder have increased in the first five months of 2022 by 147% compared to a year ago. As of May, 577 intentional deaths had been counted. 80% of these murders are concentrated in the neighborhoods where the Police have discovered the sale and transport of drugs, so the murders are attributed to a quarrel between gangs or executions.
This year, too, there have been killings in areas where these crimes did not occur, for example in Los Ceibos, northwest of Guayaquil. In this residential area until May 2022, 4 people were killed, while in 2021, in the same months, there were no intentional homicides. In Samborondón, an area of private development, deliberate deaths have doubled.
Colonel in the Armed Forces Passive Service, Alberto Molina, agrees with the government version and told El Universo that the increase in killings occurs at the same time as drug seizures have increased. So far this year, authorities have seized 90 tonnes of drugs, more than double that of 2021. Not only are they in Mexico, the increase in homicides is due to drug seizures. The immediate reaction is the creation of terror, the hanging of corpses. "There are two messages, one for the rival gangs and the other for the citizens and the Government", says Molina.
According to Molina, in Ecuador there are criminal gangs like the Jalisco New Generation cartel and the Sinaloa cartel, in addition to the Italian, Albanian and Chinese mafias.
According to numerous journalistic investigations, Guayaquil has become the center of confrontation between Albanian gangs seeking to control cocaine trafficking lines. In the last decade there have already been at least six Albanians executed - a form of murder typical of mobsters. All have been involved in drug trafficking. The latest of these executions took place at a restaurant in Guayaquil where Albanian drug boss Ergys Dashi was shot.
In the port city of Ecuador there is a war between Colombian, Mexican, Albanian and Russian cartels competing for the lucrative European market. The Albanian mafia forms alliances with the Sinaloa cartel, which has also been linked to Choneros, an Ecuadorian criminal gang blamed for bloodshed in the country's prisons.
The influence of the Albanian mafia in Latin America is seen in the increase of shipments to Durrës, a port city in western Albania, where more than a ton of cocaine hidden in boxes of bananas was seized. The drugs that leave Guayaquil, according to information from the authorities, are usually hidden in containers. Ecuador is one of the largest exporters of bananas in the world.
The arrival of Albanians in Ecuador dates back to early 2010. Most of them live in Guayaquil with false identities to avoid persecution in Albania. Albanians and the Balkan mafia are believed to have gained influence in the international drug trade. This coincides with an investigation conducted by the digital media "Plan V" of Ecuador, which in 2019 already revealed the operation of the Albanian mafia in the country.
According to investigations, Albanian criminal groups arrived in the country from 2014 to 2015. They withdrew from the opportunity to establish direct contacts with the cartels of Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, among others. In addition, Ecuador is considered a vulnerable country plagued by corruption, which allows members of these mafias to buy fraudulent documents, such as identity cards and passports.
According to Molina for El Universo, these criminal organizations have been operating in the country for at least 15 years and have settled in Ecuador respecting the impunity surrounding the crimes they commit.
Ecuador has been identified as an attractive place for drug trafficking due to its drug delivery routes to North America, Central America and Europe. One of the roads, according to Molina, starts in the Colombian department of Nariño, on the northern border of Ecuador, and passes through Esmeralda, Manabí and Guayas, the three provinces that are now in a state of emergency.
The ports of Guayaquil and Manta are preferred by drug traffickers for sending hidden drugs to containers exported from there: "85% of drugs are shipped by sea," says Molina.
