The public leak a few months ago of the database of salaries and vehicle license plates of all citizens in the country is having its first effects on foreign investors as well. The Call center sector, once an oasis of employment for young people, but which is now also suffering from a lack of labor force due to emigration, is facing a decline in contracts.
According to tax data (DPT), 12,404 employees were employed in the call center until September 2022. Compared to 2021, the number of employees has decreased by 18%. While the number of call center enterprises according to DPT data until September 2022 was 543 businesses. Alketion Cali, administrator of the call center company "Icon Albania", told Monitor that Italian companies have refused to give them new contracts, due to insecurity in data storage.
"A few weeks ago we had a conversation about cooperation with a company in the telecommunications sector in Italy which wanted to develop its campaign from Albania. But unfortunately the contract was not realized, as the managers told us that Albania is not a safe place for storing sensitive data of their clients, based on the recent events that happened with the publication of the data. The uncertainty in data storage is creating many problems for us in continuing to work with foreign investors. It is a problem that must be addressed", affirms Mr. Horse.
In December 2021, the first list of 630,000 employees across the country, employed and self-employed, was published, while salaries were published for about 550,000 people, who are employed in businesses and in the state
The verifications showed that the list was real, as its publication constitutes the biggest disclosure of highly sensitive personal data, after the publication of personal data during this year's electoral elections. The Prosecutor's Office of Tirana started a verification process after the publication of the data, but there were no convictions.
The data leak didn't end there. Then the database with license plates of 530,000 citizens was published, including the brand of the vehicle, their model and color.
While in the last days of December, even a second level bank in the country was part of the cyber attacks.
